Thermogravimetric Analyzer

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measures the amount and rate of change in the mass of a sample as a function of temperature or time in a controlled atmosphere such as nitrogen, air, oxygen, argon. The technique can analyze materials that exhibit either mass loss or gain due to decomposition, oxidation or loss of volatiles (moisture, solvents, greases).

Types of measurements:

  • Compositional analysis of multi-component materials or blends
  • Fingerprinting unknown polymers
  • Thermal stabilities
  • Oxidative stabilities
  • Estimation of product lifetimes
  • Decomposition kinetics
  • Effects of reactive atmospheres on materials
  • Filler or ash content in materials (carbon black, ceramics, glass fibers, carbon fibers, pigments)
  • Moisture and volatiles content

In addition, TGA Q500 can be adapted for evolved gas analysis with either FT-IR, MS, or GC/MS.
